Save Game Locations

Windows %USERPROFILE%\My Documents\My Games\FasterThanLight\[1]
Mac OSX ~/Library/Application Support/FasterThanLight/
Linux ~/.local/share/FasterThanLight/

Save Game Files

The file prof.sav (or ae_prof.sav for the Advanced Edition) contains unlocked ships and game preferences.

The file continue.sav is generated when pressing 'Save & Quit'.

  • No save file is generated if pressing only 'Quit'.
  • If one dies or wins the game, the file is automatically deleted as is standard in roguelike games.

Cloud Syncing

Natively supported by GameSave Manager.

Dropbox can be used to sync game save files. By using Dropbox you can jump back to previous savestates or recover your continue.sav at any time. You just have to move your FasterThanLight folder to the Dropbox and create a symbolic link in its original location. Don't try to create a hard link, as this would only backup your current profile/savegame.

BitTorrent Sync can also be used to sync game save folders across operating systems. Just set up the respective folders to sync together via the same secret.

[ SyncThing] can be used similarly to BitTorrent Sync, but provides more advanced options if so desired.

Local Alternatives

There are tools available that allow for easy local save game backup.

  • FTLSaveGameManager Visual Basic, allows for manual save backup creation.
  • ftlautosave Java, automatically creates backups of the save files as they change.
